Our speaker, Diane Wright, has noted that 130 years ago August 12, the last known Quagga died in a zoo in Amsterdam. The Quagga, a subspecies of zebra that roamed southern Africa until the mid 1800s, was the first extinct animal to have its DNA analyzed, and now efforts are under way to use that DNA to bring the species “back to life.” We’ll look at the controversy surrounding this project, and consider the broader implications of our ability to bring back — and to eradicate — species of animals.
