Over 150 years ago, on October 18, 1867, United States troops marched up to Castle Hill in Sitka, Alaska, as Russian soldiers lowered the Russian flag. Then the United States flag was raised over the land that had been purchased from Russia for about seven million dollars. The day is still celebrated in Sitka, but not by all the residents.
